Henderson Better for Tough Start - Ipswich Town News

Stephen Henderson has nothing against the Ipswich supporters he struggled to win over in his first few appearances for the club — in fact he would like to thank them.

The on-loan West Ham goalkeeper initially found it tough when he was introduced at the expense of fans’ favourite Scott Loach but he insists the experience has benefited him.

Henderson, 24, said: "I wouldn’t change it. I’m actually glad it happened because it made me think a lot more and it has maybe changed everything about my game to be honest.

"It’s a side of the game you have to deal with. I’d never really experienced grief from my own fans before but I’m really happy it happened. I know it sounds daft but it has helped to make me a stronger person and I’ve come through then other side better for that experience.”

Henderson was impressed that as many as 1,300 fans braved the inclement weather to attend the 2-1 win at Charlton on Boxing Day.

He added: "They were right behind my goal and they were really good. I know I had a tough time with them in the first few weeks I was here because my performances weren’t up to scratch but they have been absolutely outstanding with me ever since then.

"It’s a fantastic club and I’m really starting to see how good it is actually is here. Winning over the fans wasn’t my main priority but it’s always nice to have them on your side. Don’t get me wrong, I know it can all change so quickly in football, but it’s nice to have them support me and clap me when I do good things.

"I’m the first to admit I wasn’t performing well, so rightly so I had to take the criticism. I think I’m doing a lot better now but there’s still a lot to come from me because I know what I can do.

"You don’t become a bad keeper overnight so I knew after a few games I’d show what I’m all about and hopefully I’m now starting to show people what that is.”

The one-time Aston Villa youngster, who has also played for Bristol City and Portsmouth, is quick to praise his defensive colleagues for the improvement in the goals-against column.

He said: "The back four have been brilliant. Brad has come in and the other three lads have been really solid and since the Leicester game I’ve not really had a lot to do in the last six or seven games, which is always a good sign for a keeper.”
