Town boss Mick McCarthy admitted that his return to Molineux was special, and not just because his current side beat his old club 2-0. The Wolves fans gave the Blues manager and his assistant Terry Connor a warm reception, both as they took to the field and as they returned down the tunnel after the final whistle.
McCarthy said: "It would be a lie if I said it was nothing special because it is. My last game here [a 5-1 home defeat to West Brom in February] I had to go out the back door and it was a really horrible day for me. I’ll never forget that.
"So, to have won and to have had the applause and ovation, I think it showed what most Wolves fans thought of me, rather than the minority that wouldn’t let me leave via the front door.
"And the ones that were singing for my [head] are doing it for Ståle now. Be careful, you might get what you wish for.
"But that is a lasting memory for me now, being on the pitch, being applauded off. It was lovely. That is how I’d like to remember my time here, rather than anything else. Thank you to all them that did that for me today.”
Regarding the game itself, he was delighted with the performance: "I thought we were excellent. If Stan Cullis had been sat in the stand, he couldn’t have said that they deserved to win.
"The staunchest Wolves player, supporter, anybody wouldn’t get anywhere near saying we didn’t deserve that today on that performance.”
McCarthy says his game plan came off perfectly: "That’s what happens when you win, you can say that afterwards most times. It worked, I thought it was a good performance.
"They’ve worked so hard in the game and the players deserve credit for that because they put a real shift in.”
Wolves boss Ståle Solbakken felt the display was similar to their last performance: "I think it was more or less the same story as against Peterborough. We started OK, not brilliant, but OK.
"And then after they scored their first goal, you could see it looked like an uphill battle from minute one after that.”
Solbakken wasn't sure about Kevin Doyle's early shout for a penalty: "I haven’t seen it but I struggle to see when Kevin Doyle is going to get a penalty at home this season. I think that’s the third or fourth time he has appealed for one this season.
"But that’s no excuse, we played for 80 minutes after that incident. And when you play so poorly, [you can’t] hang yourself up in that situation and hope that it would be different. He probably would have sent it over the bar today.”
