Clegg Planning to Stay in Sport - Ipswich Town News

Simon Clegg says he plans to return home to Surrey and reacquaint himself with his family now that his four-year stint as Town chief executive is at an end. He will then take a holiday before looking for another role in sport.

Clegg, who spent six days a week in Suffolk during his time with the Blues, told TWTD: "I’m going to go back and reacquaint myself with my family and that will probably take a couple of weeks, by which time my wife will have had enough of me and be kicking me out of the door and telling me to go and find another job.

"I’m going to take a long holiday. I’m being operated on here in Ipswich next Tuesday and I’ll get some recovery from that, a long holiday, and then look to find the right opportunity.”

He was quick to rule himself out of the running for one role: "I had an amusing text from one of my colleagues at a Football League club asking me if it was true that I was joining up with Roy Keane and going to Nottingham Forest. I can quash that rumour straight away!

"Whether it’s in international sport, whether it’s in domestic sport, I’m still young enough, fit enough and hungry enough to aspire to another big job going forward. Whether that’s in football, Olympic sport or another sport, who knows?”

Owner Marcus Evans, who already handled most of Town's transfer business, is planning to become more involved with the club on a day-to-day basis with current board members Ian Milne and Jonathan Symonds becoming joint-managing directors, a decision Clegg says was partly motivated by the new Financial Fair Play rules: "First of all, it’s my decision to go but he has seen it as an opportunity to make some savings by not replacing me on a like-for-like basis.”

He believes the new situation will develop as it becomes established: "We need to see how the whole thing settles down and how much of a hands-on role Marcus is going to play. The position going forward is that there are going to be two joint-managing directors.”

How much of his time Evans plans to spend at the club Clegg was unable to confirm: "I can’t answer that, that’s a question you’ll have to put to him, although somehow I’m not convinced he’s going to be sat in front of you in this seat going forward.”

Whether either of the joint-managing directors will take on a more public role Clegg was similarly unsure: "I think you’ll have discuss that with them.”
