Town Exit Suffolk Premier Cup - Ipswich Town News

A young Town reserves side were knocked out of the Suffolk Premier Cup at the semi-final stage after losing 1-0 to Lowestoft at Kirkley and Pakefield's Walmer Road ground. Michael Frew netted the game's only goal late on.

Josh Carson was the only player in Town's side with more than a few minutes' first team experience, while new managing directors Ian Milne and Jonathan Symonds were both in attendance.

Lowestoft came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute when one-time Town trialist Joe Francis got the better of Kyle Hammond, but he hit his left-foot shot across Michael Crowe and just wide of the far post.

Five minutes later Crowe was forced to make a good block at his near post to deny Josh Dawkin after a good ball from Stuart Ainsley, older brother of Jack and a former Town youngster.

Ex-Norwich City midfielder and one-time Town schoolboy Robert Eagle lobbed a bouncing ball wide soon after, before Andrew Fisk picked up the game's first yellow card for a foul on Byron Lawrence.

Another former Town man Scott Mitchell headed straight at Crowe from a left-wing cross early in the second half, before Josh Dawkin fired wide when he should have put the Trawler Boys ahead soon after.

Cormac Burke curled a freekick wide in a rare foray forward for Mark Kennedy's Town side with 20 minutes remaining.

Michael Frew secured Lowestoft's passage through to the final - where they will meet either Bury Town or Leiston who meet at Needham Market's Blooomfields next Tuesday - with nine minutes remaining.

Frew latched onto former Town U18 skipper Curtley Williams's ball over the top and took his shot early from 25 yards, leaving Crowe with no chance.

Town couldn't create a decent opening in the remaining minutes and in truth, they failed to test Andy Plummer, yet another Playford Road alumnus, in the Lowestoft goal all night.

Schoolboy Matt Clarke, who played at centre-half alongside an unsteady Omar Sowunmi, was probably the pick of Town side, while Gunnar Thorsteinsson battled well in midfield. Carson was quiet throughout.

Town: Crowe, Hammond, Leddy, Thorsteinsson, Sowunmi, Clarke, Burke (Winter 71), Carson, Marriott (Galvin 85), Lawrence, Timlin. Unused: Marsden, Berkane, Robinson.
