Town have withdrawn right-back Elliott Hewitt from the Wales U21 squad for their Euro 2015 qualifier against Moldova at Llanelli on Friday. Hewitt, who made his full league debut for the Blues at Peterborough last weekend, has a hip injury.
Hewitt missed the start of the season having undergone two hip impingement operations but, speaking on Friday, manager Mick McCarthy was hopeful that the current problem isn’t related to the surgery: "I’m not sure it is yet. It might be a hip flexor, which would be his muscle, so as long as it’s not mechanical, skeletal.
"It’s up here in his abdominal area, which could be his hip flexor. Until we have him scanned and looked at properly we don’t know.”
Meanwhile, centre-half Tommy Smith is back off on his travels for World Cup qualifiers with New Zealand against New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands.
The All Whites face the New Caledonians at home on Friday and the Solomon Islands away on Tuesday. New Zealand have won all four of their World Cup qualifiers up to now.
Smith has been tipped to be named the successor to the retired Ryan Nelsen as the permanent skipper of the All Whites having deputised in his absence on a number of occasions over the last year.
Elsewhere, keeper Stephen Henderson is on standby for the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria.
