Blues defender Richard Stearman felt Town threw away a point after Hull City grabbed a late winner to leave Portman Road with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
The Tigers had much the better of the first half, in which Robbie Brady put them ahead from the penalty spot after Guirane N’Daw had fouled David Meyler, but the Blues were on top in a second period in which Anthony Wordsworth scored his first goal for the Blues.
However, against the run of play, Robert Koren nodded home Brady’s cross in the 83rd minute to grab the win.
"It was points lost,” Stearman insisted. "They were on top first half, we were on top the second, so to lose was with a goal like that was very disappointing.
"We dug in and had chances to win. We went back to 4-4-2 and we were dominating the game but instead of seeing the game out, we threw away a point.
"The penalty was harsh but it was a gift we didn’t need to give. We will learn from that and come back fighting.
"Our argument to the ref was it was shoulder to shoulder, but he felt their player was slightly in front so gave the pen. It has gone now and we move on.”
The right-back or centre-half said he didn’t enjoy eavesdropping on Hull’s post-match celebrations: "It was galling, it is not nice but fair play to them, they have done very well this season.
"They are where they are for a reason, just as where we are for a reason as well. We have our own agenda. They have strength in depth and capitalise on that.”
The on-loan Wolves man was pleased to see midfielder Wordsworth make a scoring return to the Town side as a sub: "He is a special player and it was good to see him back out there.”
Stearman had been part of a Town backline which had kept five clean sheets in a row, equalling a club record, and the 25-year-old was disappointed not to be able to set a new milestone of six, but more so that it meant Town hadn’t claimed something from the game: "It means we have not got at least a point.
"Records are great but we are here to be tight at the back. We come back again Tuesday and will look to rectify this.
"Championship games come thick and fast so we have a chance to pick up more points and we are still looking to get a few more points.
"Until we are mathematically safe anything can happen, but we are very confident we can amass enough points to stay up.”
