Anthony Wordsworth has revealed the background to his goal celebration at Portman Road on Saturday.
The ex-Colchester midfielder marked his return to action by scoring in the 2-1 home defeat by second-placed Hull and immediately made a beeline for the Town dug-out.
Wordsworth, relieved to return to action after breaking three vertebrae, said: "I don’t really remember too much about it, just that I mainly celebrated with the physio, Matt Byard. I was delighted with him for helping me to get back playing so quickly.
"He’s done a really super job so it was nice to share that moment with him. We were having a laugh about a couple of weeks ago and he said he had seen someone else do it so if I did score I should run over to him.
"The treatment he’s been giving me has been different class and I can’t thank him and the other members of staff enough for all their help and the time they have devoted to me in order to get me back playing as soon as possible.”
Wordsworth completed his estimated £150,000 move in the January transfer window and then, following substitute appearances against both Middlesbrough and Blackburn, he had the cruel misfortune to be injured only 35 minutes into the home clash against Blackpool that marked his first Town start.
Failing to realise the full extent of his injury, the 24-year-old Londoner was tweeting pictures of himself in the ambulance as he made his way to Ipswich Hospital while the team-mates he left behind earned a valuable three points courtesy of a 1-0 win, Michael Chopra scoring the all-important clincher.
Wordsworth added: "I didn’t realise how serious it was until I actually got to the hospital and they told me I had broken my back. That wasn’t very nice but luckily I’m back now.
"I had about eight weeks out and it was difficult. I’d never been out injured for that amount of time before. But Matt and Alex, the other physio, have both been brilliant and got me back playing as quickly as possible.
"I still need to look after it and rebuild the muscles around my back but I can train and play while I’m doing that. It’s not going to stop me from cracking on over the last few games of the season.
"It was nice to get a goal in my first game back. Obviously, I’d been injured for a long time and I’m still a long way from where I want to be, but it was good to score.
"I went in for a few challenges in an U21 game last Monday and I was okay, but it was a difficult one against Hull because I thought I might get hurt. Then I thought how disappointed the manager would be with me if I didn’t go for it.
"I’ve scored a few headers in my time but that was probably the most important one. I anticipated where the ball was going to go and luckily enough I was in the right place at the right time. I gambled on it really. I’ve done the same thing in the past and scored a lot of goals that way, by making runs from midfield, and hopefully I can continue to do that here.
"I scored a lot of goals at Colchester so hopefully I can get a few more here if I continue to get into the box on a regular basis. It’s always important for the midfielders to help out the strikers because it takes a lot of pressure off them.”
