Busy Summer Ahead for Wordsworth - Ipswich Town News

Why will midfielder Anthony Wordsworth be Town’s odd man out this summer? Because he intends to train all the way through to July when the squad report back for pre-season training.

Wordsworth was on target in his comeback against Hull at Portman Road on Saturday but admitted: "It must have been clear to see that I was struggling with my fitness. Although I only played 45 minutes it was difficult. I was struggling and about 20 minutes in I was breathing very heavily.

"I’m way behind the other lads in terms of match fitness and pre-season is the most important thing for me now. I must make sure I get myself right. I need to come back as fit as possible and have a real go next season.”

Wordsworth has had little opportunity to make an impact at Portman Road after suffering three broken vertebrae in the 1-0 home win over Blackpool in February, a game that marked his first competitive start after joining from Colchester the previous month.

He added: "It’s always difficult going to a new club in January because you haven’t got that much time to settle in. Before you know it the season is over and that’s without an injury that keeps you out for eight weeks.

"I’m very much looking forward to coming back, getting as fit as I can and having a full season ahead of me, but I am going to have to do something to catch up.

"I will put in a lot of extra work during the summer. I don’t want to come back in July and find I am falling behind when the pre-season games start.

"I’m going to have to be working on my own separately and then when I come back to join the other lads I’ll hopefully be at the same level as everyone else.”
