Full-Backs Aiming for More Goals - Ipswich Town News

It isn’t every day that one full-back provides a cross for the other to score but Aaron Cresswell and Luke Chambers managed it for Town against Middlesbrough last week.

Coincidentally, as Cresswell has revealed, team-mate Chambers felt confident about his chances of finding the back of the net against Boro to register his first goal of the season.

Left-back Cresswell, who scored himself the following Tuesday against Yeovil, said: "Chambo is relishing his chance. Obviously, he’s a centre-half but I think he’s done extremely well since he’s been pushed out to right-back.

"At half-time against Boro he actually said to me ‘If you’re crossing it I’ll be there at the back stick’. When I put that cross in I wasn’t aiming for him, just putting the ball in the box, and I couldn’t believe it when he scored with the header.”

Former Town skipper Mick Mills, who played in both full-back roles for club and country, was among many impressed onlookers in his role as BBC Radio Suffolk’s matchday summariser.

Mills said: "I don’t remember it happening too often in my playing days. In fact, I was trying to recall similar goals during my time as a player and there was only one that came to mind, against Liverpool in an FA Cup tie at Portman Road back in 1975.

"It was near the end when George Burley went down the right and sent in a cross. It was a very muddy pitch and I just about managed to poke the ball over the line from close range.

"That was the only goal of the game and hugely important. We went on to reach the semi-final that year and went out in a replay against West Ham at Stamford Bridge, which was definitely one of the lowest points of my career.”

Cresswell, pictured above celebrating his best Town strike so far against Crystal Palace last season, is hoping that he and his defensive colleagues, all of whom have already broken their scoring ducks for the season, will continue to contribute in such a positive way.

He added: "If we can get goals or assists that’s a bonus for us. It’s up to me and Chambers to get forward and try to put crosses in.

"Throughout the week in training we always work on shape and progression of the football. If that’s me and Chambers getting forward and getting more opportunities into the front players we’ll take that as a bonus.”

Cresswell is also enjoying his left-sided partnership with on-loan Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe, who has forced his way into the Town side ahead of Jay Tabb.

He said: "It’s great playing with Tunners. He’s a similar type of player to Tabby and they both work extremely hard. With Tunners I’ve got a great little combination going on at the minute. He likes to come inside and I like to go round him.”

Cresswell also enjoyed Liverpool’s recent win over United at Anfield and added with a grin: "Tunners is a true Manc. I actually went to the game so he got a bit of stick from me on the Monday morning.”
