Christophe Berra clocked up 154 appearances for former club Wolves without scoring — but he has already netted twice for Town.
The 28-year-old Scot said: "I was at Wolves for four and a half years and I didn’t score a competitive goal but now I’ve got two in six games.
"Hopefully, if I keep getting into the positions and get the chances, I will add to that tally.
"If the delivery is good we’ve got good players who can attack the ball so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t score more goals courtesy of the defenders.”
But Berra, who claimed five goals in his 146 games for first club Hearts, knows it was his ability as a defender that persuaded Town boss Mick McCarthy to sign him for a second time.
Having spent £2.5 million to bring him south of the border to Wolves in January 2009, McCarthy snapped him up on a free transfer in the summer after his Molineux deal expired.
"I’m the type who loves defending and I think that’s the manager’s kind of player," Berra says. "I’ve worked under various managers and I’ve taken things from them all. The manager here wants us to defend well and when we can play we try to play.
"Against Derby in the second half we didn’t play with the ball or defend with the ball. We just tried to defend as a team instead of getting the ball, passing it about a bit more and being braver. We need to learn from it.”
He added "At Derby we played really well in the first half but in the second half they came out of the traps and played with more freedom because they had nothing to lose.
"You’ve got to remember that Derby are a good team, they play good football and they were nicely placed in the league as well. They got an early goal and the momentum changed. It happens in football.
"It happened last year when Manchester United played Everton, were 4-2 up and drew 4-4. That’s football for you and that’s why we play it and why fans want to watch it.
"It’s exciting and interesting but for our part it’s a bit disappointing. We just have to take the point and move on to our next game.”
It was not the first time that Berra had been involved in a dramatic comeback from being 4-1 down, although the circumstances were dramatically different from those at Pride Park.
He recalled: "When I was at Wolves, the season we got relegated from the Premier League, we were 4-1 down at Swansea and came back to draw 4-4. We probably should have won it because we had a couple of good chances near the end.
"That’s the sport we are in and you never know what is going to happen. It’s not always plain sailing and you win 2-0 or 3-0. It’s exciting and it’s why British football is different to foreign football.
"If the game at Derby had been in Spain or Italy it would probably have stayed the same, but here teams gamble, go for it and you can see what happens.”
