Christophe Berra does not expect former Wolves team-mate Stephen Hunt, who TWTD recently revealed is training with Town, to be without a club for long.
Manager Mick McCarthy has been happy to allow Hunt to use the facilities at the club’s Playford Road training ground in order to keep fit in readiness for his next move.
But he was quick to stress that he was not in a position to re-sign the Republic of Ireland winger for whom he paid Hull an estimated £3.5 million in August 2009, at a time when he was manager of Wolves.
Berra said: "He’s an infectious character. He’s kept himself fit and he’s just waiting for that deal to come along, whoever it may be with.
"He’s a good lad and a good player, and I’m sure he’ll get something sorted out. The gaffer is very friendly like that with ex-players and obviously Hunty jumped at the chance to come in and train with players who are fully fit and sharp. It can only benefit him.”
McCarthy has also been linked with a move for ex-Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who is also without a club as he works on his recovery from a broken leg and damaged ankle ligaments.
Berra added: "Sylvan is still recovering from his injury. It will all come down to the manager, financial aspects, whether the player is fit and whether it fits within our structure.
"I’m sure that if there are any good players out there that the manager fancies, and it was the right deal, he would try to get them in.”
Having left Wolves when his contract expired in the summer, Berra spent some time back in his native Scotland and at one stage looked set to join Rangers.
But he considered the opportunity to team up again with McCarthy too good to miss and was delighted to accept his offer of a two-year deal at Portman Road.
Berra added: "It was Mick who signed me for Wolves and he’s very honest, straight down the middle and tells you how it is. I’ve worked for managers before who maybe don’t always tell you the truth. You know where you stand with Mick and what he wants from you.
"I think he’s a well-respected man in worldwide football and he knows this division well. There’s a great bunch of lads here and we are all working together. There’s great morale and in our last [seven games] we’ve only been beaten once.”
