Town boss Mick McCarthy felt his side would have earned a deserved a point but for letting their guard down and conceding Scott Arfield’s 80th minute goal.
"They’re an accomplished side but no more accomplished than us,” McCarthy said afterwards. "Except that they had a Johnny on the spot that took a chance by running in and got on the end of something. I don’t think there was anything in the game.
"You only get what you deserve and I thought they defended their goal for 90-odd minutes and we just let our guard down a little bit.”
Overall, he was pleased with his side’s display: "I thought we played well, I was delighted with how we played, against a good side.
"Were they that bit better than us? I don’t think so. They’ve had people putting the ball in the net.
"I thought it looked like a goalless draw coming up but I thought we made three or four tiny little errors in terms of letting the cross come in. Somebody just said to me that it was a great cross and a great header, but it always is when you score.
"He gets across and he does well, he runs in the box. We left the middle of the goals, we should have stayed in and stayed narrow and it’s cost us.”
McCarthy believes the teams take much the same approach to the game: "They’re very similar how they play. They defended their goal when we got in behind them a couple of times.
"But then apart from the goal, so have we. But unfortunately apart from the goal is the only thing that counts. And we lost.”
It’s far from the first time this season that McCarthy has said Town have played well but without getting anything for their trouble.
He says stopping small mistakes such as those that led to Burnley’s goal is what will help turn those performances into points: "The tiny little errors that came, there were about three or four of them for the goal.
"If it was us that scored, I’d be saying that it was a good cross, a good run, a good header, all that. Fair play, let them enjoy that because that’s won the game.
"But I know what’s cost us, tiny little things, tiny detail. It’s left us with no points when we should have had a point.”
Keeper Dean Gerken was forced off with an injury in the first half but McCarthy says it’s not too serious: "He’s got a dead leg, we’ll see.”
Burnley manager Sean Dyche thought his side just about shaded it: "I thought they had the better end of the first half, but yet again there were small margins.
"I thought the framework the team play from and some good basics made us solid enough not to concede first half.
"Not that there were loads of chances in the first half for either side, but the overall feel of the game was that they had the upper hand.
"In the second half, it levelled. There were pockets of good play from ourselves.
"You’re watching and thinking it was going to be one of those days when it is a 0-0 but I thought it was a moment of quality, a very good cross and a very good header, which took it in the end.”
