McCarthy Remaining Coy on Ireland - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy added little to his previous comments on the speculation linking him with the Ireland job at his pre-match press conference at lunchtime. The Blues are yet to receive any contact from the FAI regarding McCarthy despite continuing claims that he is the man they want to succeed Giovanni Trapattoni.

Asked whether there was any change on the Ireland situation, McCarthy joked: "No, it’s still in the same place.”

Is he able to rule himself out of the running? "I told you, it’s still in the same place, just across from Liverpool and Manchester.

"If you’re going to go and visit it there are flights from Stansted, Southend, Aer Lingus or Ryanair.”

Last week, McCarthy said he would neither rule himself in nor out of the chase for the role he previously held between 1996 and 2002 until the FAI formally ask him whether he is interested.

Meanwhile, initial frontrunner Martin O’Neill’s odds have shortened this afternoon and the Northern Irishman is now a narrow favourite ahead of McCarthy with some bookies.
