Tanner Given Free Transfer - Ipswich Town News

Adam Tanner is to be given a free transfer by Town the club announced this evening. Chairman David Sheepshanks said in a statement: "Adam Tanner has let both himself and the Club down and unfortunately this is not the first time.

At Ipswich Town we take our responsibilities to the Community seriously in full recognition of the fact that professional footballers have a duty as role models for the younger generation. Anyone can make a mistake but we cannot accept such repeated misconduct.

Coming so soon after Gary Croft's difficulties, this case does not cast the Club in a good light. However, this is coincidental and in no way indicative of any general fall in standards.

To Adam Tanner's credit he recognised his problem and voluntarily put himself forward for remedial treatment which is ongoing. We accept his strong feelings of regret and have supported him throughout this trauma as we did previously. Now we think the time is right for Adam to try and resurrect his career at another club and, after discussion with him today, we are making him available for transfer for which no fee will be required."

George Burley has said that a new signing is imminent and speculation suggests that it is likely to be Grimsby's Jack Lester or Crystal Palace's Hayden Mullins. Both are known to be long-term targets of the Town manager. Town have made an offer and are awaiting a response.

Other rumours recently have suggested Alan Johnston might be coming to Town althoug this seems unlikely as there still seems some life in the deal with Bolton that appeared to have fallen through earlier in the week. Matt Svensson is injured for a coule of weeks so a deal with Crystal Palace for him seems unlikely at the moment.
