Chambers Happy to Do Job For the Team - Ipswich Town News

Luke Chambers insists he has no plans to talk to manager Mick McCarthy about resuming his role in the heart of the Town defence.

Chambers has been filling in at right-back since McCarthy reshuffled his pack at the end of August, introducing Christophe Berra to partner Tommy Smith in a new-look back four.

Asked if he still considered himself to be a central defender playing temporarily at full-back, or if he now regarded himself first and foremost as a right-back, Chambers smiled and said: "I think we all know the answer to that.

"As long as we are doing well, and my own performances are good enough to enable me to stay in the team, all well and good.

"I think everyone knows what sort of character I am — I’m a lad who plays for the team — and if the gaffer needs me to continue playing there and everyone’s happy with that I will carry on. But, yes, I’d love to be back in the middle.”

But Chambers has no plans to broach the subject with McCarthy, adding: "I think I’d be silly to do that because we’ve won four of our last five games, including three in a row, and I don’t think we need to change too many things.

"The back four has settled itself down and obviously Deano [Dean Gerken] has done well since he’s come in. We know each other’s roles at the minute and we’re obviously building game by game.

"Tommy and Christophe have done very, very well in there and I’m getting a relationship with Christophe on my side, so we can carry on unless we bring someone else in. If I’m playing I’m happy.”
