Wilnis Asks for Transfer! - Ipswich Town News

Town defender Fabian Wilnis has asked George Burley for a transfer. The Dutchman has been out of favour at Portman Road over recent weeks and sees his failure to make the much changed side at Dagenham and Redbridge as the last straw.

Wilnis told TWTD: "It has been very frustrating to be out of the side for the last 15 or 16 games. The manager said that he would make changes for the game at the weekend and even then I didn't get to play. That is his decision and now I have made mine."

Wilnis says he met with George Burley on Monday to put in his request but says as yet there has been no interest. He says he would like to stay in England if and when he moves.

The Dutchman has been at Town since January 1999 when he joined from De Graafschaap for £200,000. He says he and his wife have both enjoyed their spell here: "It is frustrating because I have enjoyed my time here and I'd love to stay, but I'm fit again and need to play football. I don't want to spend the next year and a half on the bench or not playing."

The 31-year-old admits that an incident during Town's UEFA Cup tie away in Helsingborg was the beginning of the end. Wilnis was substituted by Chris Makin before half-time and reacted angrily. He subsequently spoke to George Burley: "I met with the manager after the game, and it was not a good meeting. Since then I have been on the sidelines."

Wilnis has been a popular member of the Town squad and had a difficult task in stepping into Mauricio Taricco's boots. Up until the latter half of last season he was a regular choice when George Burley bought Chris Makin from Sunderland. Since then he has been in and out of the side.
