Even if Town defender Aaron Cresswell is rested for today’s FA Cup third round clash with Preston North End, it will do nothing to diminish the high regard in which he holds the competition. Manager Mick McCarthy has already stated will be a much-changed side, but Cresswell is no less enthusiastic about the tie.
The 24-year-old said: "It’s such a massive competition and it would be nice to have a good run in it. It’s one of the biggest cup competitions in the world and I think every one of us will want to play in it and hopefully get us into the next round.”
One option McCarthy has is to rest left-back Cresswell to make way for Tyrone Mings, who could also come into the side at the centre of the defence.
Wherever the 20-year-old former Chippenham Town man plays Cresswell is confident he will be up to the task: "Tyrone’s come in from non-league and he’s been here just over a year now.
"Every time he has played he has done very well and even though he’s still young and he’s still learning there’s no reason why he can’t come in and do well.”
Cresswell, a Scouser who would love a fourth round trip to face boyhood favourites Liverpool, believes there is always a chance of Football League clubs advancing to the later stages of the tournament.
He said: "Bradford got to the Capital One Cup final last season and there’s no reason why we can’t have a little run. It would be nice to get into the next round and draw a big team, hopefully Liverpool at Anfield.
"To have a good cup run would obviously be good for the club financially and I don’t see why it should affect our main ambition, which is obviously to win promotion to the Premier League.”
