Ex-Town striker Jordan Rhodes scored twice, once from the spot, for the Lancastrian side, who the Blues visit on Saturday.
Blackburn are 11th on 53 points, three places and five points behind eighth-placed Town, who have 58. Brighton are ninth a point behind the Blues.
Elsewhere, fifth-placed Wigan - 64 points - drew 2-2 at home to leaders Leicester, while Charlton won 1-0 at Leeds.
Meanwhile, on-loan Blues striker Jack Marriott ended his five-game goal drought with an 82nd minute winner as Woking beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1 at the Kingfield Stadium.
In League Two Freddie Veseli and his loan side Bury beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at Gigg Lane.
