Chambers Keeping Quiet on Player of the Year - Ipswich Town News

Town defender Luke Chambers is refusing to reveal how he will cast his vote in the annual poll to decide the players’ Player of the Year.

But it is not difficult to see which of his colleagues Chambers expects to emerge as the main contenders in both that and the supporters’ annual poll.

He said: "Both Christophe Berra and Tommy Smith have had great seasons and been absolutely brilliant. Tommy has improved from last season and has consistently been one of our best players.

"Also, I can’t think we could have got any better free transfer signings than Christophe Berra, David McGoldrick and Cole Skuse. Christophe has been absolutely brilliant and he’ll definitely be up there for both the awards along with Didzy, who had 16 goals when he got injured. It all represents great business by the gaffer.”

Meanwhile, Chambers also sang the praises of striker Daryl Murphy, whose late equaliser against Nottingham Forest was his 11th goal of a season that has also seen him recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad after a six-year gap.

Chambers, who is also eligible for the Republic, added: "Murph is playing some of the best football of his career and when he’s on that form I feel he’s unplayable. He was very, very good against Forest, very good against Derby and even at Brighton he worked his socks off, got his goal and led the line for us.

"When you know that Murph’s in that sort of form, he’s going to probably get hold of any sort of ball in and around his area.”

The Town skipper also hailed the contributions of strike pair Frank Nouble and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake when they have come off the bench in recent games.

He said: "It’s strange for me and the rest of the boys that Frank has had his detractors this season. I think every time he steps on that pitch you won’t see anything other than as much work rate as he can possibly give.

"Now his quality is starting to come through and everyone is giving him the plaudits. He’s been brilliant for us in the last week or so when he’s come on. He’s obviously been unlucky not to start but I feel that if the game is on a knife-edge at half-time or later on the gaffer’s got Frank chomping at the bit to get on.

"The first thing he does when he comes on is to chase the left-back, the goalkeeper, the two centre-halves and then the right-back. It seems to lift, not just the team but everyone in the stadium, and especially on Saturday when he set the goal up against Forest.

"He’s been absolutely fantastic and I couldn’t speak any more highly of Frank. His attitude all season has been absolutely spot-on.

"It was unfortunate for Sylvan that he picked up an injury when he first came into the side and it was always going to be difficult for him to get back to the level he was at for about ten years.

"But he’s a massive acquisition for us and I feel that if he gets chances he’s going to score goals for us. The keeper pulled off a great save from his header on Saturday and every time he has been called upon he has been absolutely brilliant for us as well. He may not look like the type to chase everything but the work rate that he puts in has been tremendous.”
