Skipper Luke Chambers says he and the rest of the Town squad never doubted that they had what it takes to be in play-off contention towards the end of the season. Chambers netted the Blues’ 86th minute winner as they beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at Portman Road on Saturday.
Town are currently seventh behind sixth-placed Brighton on goal difference but with Reading able to jump above both of them if they pick up a point or better against Leicester at home this evening.
Looking forward to what are now crucial Easter fixtures against fellow challengers Watford and, perhaps more significantly, form side AFC Bournemouth, he said: "It is a massive opportunity to take points and we have a big weekend ahead. It is a massive opportunity for us to take a step up.
"It will be a great game for us. Bournemouth have done tremendously well to get to where they are but we have a game on Saturday first.
"We will prepare well as we usually do for all four remaining regular season games and see where that take us.
"We never doubted ourselves. We always had real belief and we have always thought if we could be consistent, plug away and pick up points, we could be where we are now.
"Now we are in that position we don’t want our season to end early, we want to go into those final two games with everything still to play for. So we will be giving everything we can as we have done every game.”
The 28-year-old admitted there were some concerns after Doncaster equalised from the penalty spot with only seven minutes remaining on Saturday: "After we conceded we were thinking that it was so late in the game, but thankfully we stuck together, kept pressing forward and I was able to come up with a goal.
"It was brilliant for me [to score] but it is a squad game and we are all in together and we need everyone.
"You can put the win down to the double substitution. The gaffer has often made decisions for the team and the lads take it on the chin.
"We have used so few players and the squad is tight and those that came in played their part.
"It was the same with Tyrone, he came in and he has played a part in both our goals. Okay, he conceded the penalty but he was great for us.”
He continued: "I do like playing against Doncaster, two games and two goals. It is always nice to score and I’m fortunate to score twice and I was delighted to come up with the winner.
"I have tried to bomb forward all season. When the play is on the left I like to move up on the right and try and get on the end of things.
"I have done it quite a few times this season and got on the end of things. I carried on my run and was able to get onto the ball when it fell to me and I was able to hit it into the bottom corner."
Regarding Daryl Murphy, who scored Town’s opening goal just before half-time, he added: "Murph has been brilliant all season and he has been unplayable at time. Long may that continue because he has been brilliant for us.
"We have four games of the regular season left and we are all sticking together. It is a massive achievement for us to be where we are and we will keep going."
