Ex-Yeovil central defender Byron Webster is close to confirming a switch to Millwall. The 27-year-old free agent was watched by the Blues, along with his former team-mate Luke Ayling, during the latter stages of 2013/14, while Leeds, Rotherham and Scunthorpe have also been linked.
The Lions, who recently signed former Town skipper Carlos Edwards on a one-year contract, are expected to formalise the deal once Webster returns from his holiday this week with manager Ian Holloway telling News at Den: "I think he will improve our squad's strength. We're trying to improve the goals against column, so to do that you've got to stop goals going in.
"Hopefully there will be more competition in the defensive areas to make it harder to be in the team and stay in the team, and make us stronger if someone gets injured. That's the idea behind it.
"I like how Byron uses the ball from defence and I think he can play left side or right side, and with him I can also change my tactics and go three at the back if I need to.
"Hopefully someone like Byron can step up to the plate for us. I think he's in our bracket of the right age and wants to improve his career having just had one season in the Championship."
Right-back Ayling, who like Webster is leaving Huish Park with his contract up this summer, is understood to have been of greater interest to the Blues. The Glovers would be due compensation for the ex-Arsenal youngster as he is only 22 years of age.
Meanwhile, former Blues winger Reggie Lambe says he’s looking to get back into English football having joined Swedish side Nykopings on a short-term deal in March, after leaving MLS club Toronto FC, who he moved to following his Town release in the summer of 2012.
"I am heading back to England and I am determined to make an impact,” the Bermudian international told Sky Sports.
"I have unfinished business in England and my two seasons in the MLS have taught me a lot. I have seen [friend and fellow Bermudian] Nahki [Wells of Huddersfield] go on to great things and I am so happy for him, but I know I can do the same.”
