Leyton Orient striker David Mooney is being eyed by the Blues, his former club Reading and several other Championship sides, according to Sky Sports.
The 29-year-old netted 21 goals as the O’s reached the League One play-off final last season and also claimed 12 assists.
Dubliner Mooney started his senior career with hometown club Shamrock Rovers, before joining Longford Town and then Cork City.
He moved to England and signed for the Royals in 2008 but made only two starts and two sub appearances, all in the League Cup, scoring two goals, while at the Madejski Stadium.
During his time as a Reading player the 6ft 2in tall striker spent time on loan at Stockport, Norwich, Charlton and Colchester before joining Orient on a permanent basis in the summer of 2011.
While Town are likely to be in the market for another striker this summer — Sylvan Ebanks-Blake having been released and Paul Taylor having been transfer-listed - Mooney has another year left on his contract and would command a fee, something the Blues are unlikely to pay this summer, unless a current player, such as Aaron Cresswell, is sold.
Town take on Leyton Orient in a pre-season friendly at Brisbane Road on Saturday 2nd August (KO 3pm).
Elsewhere, former Town midfielder Lee Martin has signed a new two-year deal at Millwall.
Manager Ian Holloway said: "I saw signs towards the end of last season that Lee could become the player Manchester United thought he might be. I'm looking forward to working with him again next season because I think we will see even more from him."
