McCarthy Looking Forward to Open Day - Ipswich Town News

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s looking forward to today’s Open Day at Portman Road. The free event gives fans a chance to watch the Blues squad training on the main pitch and to get autographs and photographs with the players (10am to 2pm, entry via Gate 1A).

"I can’t wait!” McCarthy said. "I do enjoy it. I think it’s nice when the fans turn up to see us. I think there’s a bit of excitement about it.

"I think the new strip is better, we all feel better, it looks better. Having finished as well as we did last season I think there’s a bit of optimism about the place, so I’m looking forward to seeing everybody who turns up.”

Fans can watch McCarthy put the players through their paces before they sign autographs pitchside. In addition, there will be a host of activities for all age groups on the Fieldturf from 10am.

On the fifth anniversary of his death, the FA is celebrating Sir Bobby Robson Day with the legendary Town manager’s wife Lady Elsie, son Mark, 1990 England World Cup keeper Peter Shilton and ex-Blues chairman David Sheepshanks amongst those present and an FA Skills session taking place.

Radio Suffolk’s Mark Murphy show will be coming live from the event with Shilton, Sheepshanks, Mark Robson, manager McCarthy, skipper Luke Chambers, Blues legends Terry Butcher, John Wark and Simon Milton, and Town MD Ian Milne all appearing.

Prior to the Open Day, Town are staging the club’s biggest-ever team photo with fans joining the squad for the first time.

In order to take part, supporters need to wear Town’s new home shirt. Entry for the photo is via Gate 7 on Portman Road from 8.45am. Fans need to be in the stadium by 9.30am. Full details on the Open Day and photo on the club site.
