McCall Joins Colchester - Ipswich Town News

Former Town chief scout Steve McCall has joined Colchester United in a similar role. As previously reported, McCall, 53, left Portman Road after 13 years on the staff at the end of June and has now been appointed head of senior scouting at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

New U’s manager Tony Humes said: "I've known Steve a long time, ever since I was 16. He's obviously vastly experienced in the game.

"He recently left his position at Ipswich and it was an opportunity for us to bring him here.”

McCall, who had been scouting part-time for Carlisle since leaving the Blues, replaces long-serving Colchester chief scout Brian Owen, 69, who was previously a coach at Portman Road during Sir Bobby Robson’s time as manager.

"Brian was very good and he understands the situation,” Humes added. "He's been in the game a long time and he knows how it works.

"We do appreciate the good job that Brian has done here and I'd like to thank him for his efforts.”

McCall, a member of Robson’s 1981 UEFA Cup-winning side, and former Blues centre-half and academy manager Humes are far from the only members of the Colchester staff with Ipswich connections.

Assistant manager Richard Hall was a Town supporter as a boy, was with the Blues’ youth set-up early in his career and coached at the academy.

The League One side’s academy staff includes ex-Blues John McGreal, Wayne Brown and Fabian Wilnis, as well as Sean Thacker, who also previously worked at Playford Road.
