Ask Darren Ambrose his best position and you’ll get an honest response — even if he struggles to provide a clear-cut answer.
The 30-year-old former youth product, back at Portman Road until January after agreeing a short-term deal, admitted: "I’ve gone through my whole career not really knowing and playing in all different positions.
"Obviously, I’m an attacking midfielder who likes to pop up with a goal every now and then, so that’s what I’m going to aim for. I know it’s a cliché that a lot of footballers use but I’ll play anywhere.
"I’m just delighted to be back playing and to be back in the fold of football. Now I just want to be out there on the pitch and get some game time.”
Harlow-born Ambrose, now living in Suffolk with his wife and three young children, could not be happier at being given the opportunity to reignite his career back where it all started for him.
Town were in administration and facing an uncertain future when he departed in March 2003 for Newcastle United, managed at the time by ex-Ipswich and England boss Sir Bobby Robson.
As he surveyed his not-so-new surroundings he added: "It has changed dramatically to be honest but there are a lot of staff members that I used to play with in the youth team. They’ve come through and started to become coaches.
"It’s a fantastic club to be part of, a family club, and you see that when you come in. The boys have been fantastic since I’ve been here and it’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
"I had grown up before I came back on loan six years ago — I had just the one child then — and now I’ve grown up again. I’m a different player altogether and hopefully I can show some good things.”
Asked to nominate his favourite game from his first spell as a Town player Ambrose said: "The home game against Sheffield United stands out. Pablo Couñago got sent off, so we were down to 10 men and losing 2-0. In the second half we came out and we won 3-2. I scored and Darren Bent got two.
"That’s the highlight that sticks out but just playing was something. Portman Road’s a fantastic stadium and I can’t wait, hopefully, to pull on the shirt again and get out there.
"I still speak to Benty. He’s got a little baby now and I’ve got my family. It’s strange how we’ve both grown up. He’s done a bit more than me — he’s got his England caps — and I’m absolutely delighted for him because he was a fantastic player when he was here.
"He was a great finisher and I always knew he would go far. It’s good to see someone, a friend, you spent a lot of time with when you were young get to those heights in the game.
"I still talk to Bloomers [Matt Bloomfield] who is obviously at Wycombe and also Matt Richards, so there are a few players that I keep in touch with.
"It was a great youth team when I was here and when I broke into the first team there was a few of them who broke in as well.
"But we’re all different players now. I think you have to adapt. I don’t think anyone is the same player they were in previous years. I’ve grown up, I know what I’m good at and I know what I’m not good at now.
"I need to utilise that on the pitch and on match days. If I get the opportunity, which I’m hoping I do, I will be looking to impress with some good performances and help Ipswich up the league.”
