McCarthy: Two Victories a Good Haul - Ipswich Town News

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with Town’s six-point haul from their back to back home games against Millwall and Brighton.

"It’s been a successful few days,” he said. "Two 2-0 victories is a good haul from two home games.”

The Blues boss had praise for keeper Dean Gerken for making an important stop from Lewis Dunk’s header early in the second half.

"Gerks made a good save when we messed up,” he said. "I can’t think of many others he made, I think the other fella made as many in the end. I think he’s proved to be a really good signing for us.”

But it was left-back Tyrone Mings who grabbed most of the headlines with his most impressive performance for the Blues yet, the 21-year-old creating Jonny Parr’s opening goal in the 79th minute.

"Between him and Alex Henshall [they set up the goal], I thought Alex’s input into it was great, he could have whizzed it in and tried to do something but he set him up nicely.

"The decision to play two attacking full-backs worked today, one crossed it, one scored it.”

The Town manager was impressed with the energy Mings showed in both home matches: "He had to come off in one of the early games, he was getting cramp in one of them. I think it was a bit of nervous energy.

"I’ve said before about how it’s his position now, his to lose. He’s a fit lad and he’s a good guy.”

McCarthy said he never wavered when turning down Crystal Palace’s deadline day bid, now understood to have been £3 million plus further top-ups: "No, not for sale, which made it easy, didn’t it?

"He’s showing why I want him in my team, I want him playing for me. He’s not going anywhere else, no amount of shekels, dollars, euros or pounds is going to make any difference to me.

"I want players we’ve picked up from relatively obscurity, we’ve got him in the team, and helped him become a player and I want him to help us become a good team.”

He says Mings, who joined the Blues from Chippenham in December 2012, has shown the right attitude since the bid was turned down: "He wants to play, that’s the issue. He’s playing and for the last two games he’s played in a winning team and that’s where he wants to be.

"He’s going to develop here. He might have gone to the Premier League and never played. He might have gone to the Premier League and got ripped asunder, who knows?

"He’s developing. What was it, 18 months ago we paid 10 grand or something for him and sent a team down and played against them.”

Mings even came close to his first senior goal with a deft flick which David Stockdale saved superbly: "He made a great save on that but I think he might be questioning himself about the Murph one, as great a strike as it was,” McCarthy added.

Brighton boss Sami Hyypia was pleased with his team's display if not the result: "I am not too unhappy about the performance but of course I am unhappy that we lost - I want to win every game.

"The players want to win games but that time will come. We have to be patient and work hard in everything we do.

"We need to get some points but the league position doesn't really matter at the moment. But I know we are already a bit behind and we can't fall too far behind."
