Berra Could Win Cap - Ipswich Town News

Town defender Christophe Berra will be hoping to win his 29th full cap when Scotland take on Poland in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Warsaw this evening (Sky Sports 1, 7.30pm).

The 29-year-old, who has scored two international goals, was left out of the matchday squad for Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Georgia but is one of three candidates to replace Grant Hanley, who suffered a knee injury at the weekend. The Blackburn man has returned to his club to be assessed ahead of Rovers’ visit to Portman Road on Saturday.

Manager Gordon Strachan could opt to bring in Berra, Brighton's Gordon Greer or Aberdeen's Mark Reynolds. Greer, who started Scotland’s friendly against Poland in March, has tended to be ahead of the other two in the pecking order since Strachan took over as boss and would appear to be the favourite with Berra probably on the bench.

Daryl Murphy is returning to Town today having picked up an achilles injury while away with the Republic of Ireland - although it's not thought to be a serious problem - and Jonny Williams is also due back at the club having suffered an ankle knock while with Wales, although the on-loan Crystal Palace man was named amongst the unused subs for last night’s 2-1 home victory over Cyprus.

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are playing a full-strength Southend United side in a hastily arranged behind-closed-doors friendly at Playford Road this afternoon.

The Blues’ scheduled game against Barnsley was postponed yesterday to protect the Portman Road pitch following the heavy rain, while a Shrimpers friendly against Dagenham and Redbridge also succumbed to the weather.
