Sammon: Game Should Have Been Won - Ipswich Town News

Blues striker Conor Sammon thought Town created enough opportunities to have had Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn won before the 10-man visitors equalised via Ben Marshall's freekick three minutes into injury time.

"That’s the second game in a row we have conceded a late goal from a winning position to drop points," Sammon said.

"Games like that feel like a defeat. We created enough chances to get a second goal and when it is tight like that you have to take them because otherwise the opposition always have a chance, as they showed. Fair play to him he has put it away top corner.”

Red-carded Rovers defender Matt Kilgallon received both his bookings for fouls on the Irishman, who believes the ex-Leeds man ought to have been given his marching orders for the first challenge.

"I felt he should have gone the first time,” he said. "I was racing through on goal, just about to have a shot and it felt like a blatant clip on my heels and I don’t think that was right.

"I was surprised he didn’t get red. The lino said there was a man covering and if the referee wasn’t completely sure then he erred on the side of caution.

"Didzy went close with that freekick and we carried on and got on with things. The second yellow was clear for me. Didzy put a great ball in behind, it’s the sort of ball I like, and I have got my body across and he was in an awkward position.

"He had the choice of letting me go or taking me down and he chose to bring me down. It was frustrating for me because I want to score goals and to be taken down like that is not right.

"Once they went a man down and we went a goal up, I felt we were on top and we went for that second goal to kill off the game.”

While Blackburn’s equaliser came from a freekick, eight of the 12 goals Town have conceded this season have come either directly or indirectly from corners and Sammon says the team ought to be doing better at set pieces at both ends of the field.

"We are a big physical team and we should be doing better at set plays and we should be causing teams more problems from our own set pieces, but that is something the manager is always looking at,” he said.

"It is something we are looking at to make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future.”

The on-loan Derby man says he’s enjoying his time with the Blues and is determined to make the most of his opportunity at Portman Road.

"That’s been my mentality ever since I came to Ipswich, a really big club with good fans,” he added. "I have enjoyed it since I have been here, the fans have been great and it has been great.

"We have something really special here. I came from Derby who went on a winning run last season and we came close to going up.

"I train with these guys every day and as well as a great spirit in the dressing room we have youth and quality."

"So it is really frustrating when we have days like this when we put so much into it and end up with just a point.”

Sammon, whose Rams contract runs to June 2016, says he’d like to stay with the Blues beyond the end of his season-long loan.

"The manager was keen to have me and he has shown and interest in me in the past as well,” he continued. "That plays a part in wanting to sign, the kind of manager he is speaks for itself.

"His management style, the way he treats his players, what he expects from us and along with Terry Connor, means I’m enjoying it here. I’m playing games I’m enjoying it so I hope something more permanent comes of it.”
