Town defender Chris Makin says that a European place for Town is by no means out of the question, despite the poor first half of the season. And because of that start the former Sunderland, Oldham and Marseille man says it will be a far greater acheivement.
Of that first five months or so Makin says "In the first half of the season we were dreadful, we did not look like a team. We looked dead and buried big time. Despite this we kept a positive attitude and we certainly did not dwell on the situation. During the days at the foot of the table I never looked at a table once. I never looked on Teletext and I never read the papers. The best way to deal with the situation was blank it out. Put it aside and just concentrate on gaining results.
The team kept positve and kept looking to the next result: "We kept saying that we would win this week and things would turn round. But it didn't happen. We were not being outplayed, but were making too many silly mistakes. We were not helping ourselves. Goals were going in against us at vital times and we were unable to pull them back at the other end. The situation did not get to a critical stage when we said if we lose this match it will be all over, but it got close to that."
But the the trip to White Hart Lane in late December brought a vital three points: "The win at Tottenham on December 22nd changed everything. Since then we have not looked back. It kicked our season off and we feel we can win every match now."
Even tomorrow's visitors and if Town can win games like these a European place is by no means out of Town's reach: "Liverpool will be in great shape after winning at Leeds last week but we are confident we can beat them. We know it will not be easy, far from it, but our confidence is such that we now run on to the field expecting to do well. The top six positions in the table look like being filled by the big clubs. But we have every chance of finishing just behind. A seventh place finish is not out of the question if we keep going at the rate we are now. What an achievement that will be, and one we can look back on with pride."
