Chambo Staying Pumped Up - Ipswich Town News

Town captain Luke Chambers has vowed his untimely slip of the tongue after Saturday’s last-gasp victory at Charlton will not be repeated — but it’s a different story when it comes to his trademark fist-pump celebration.

End-of-game gestures by players to fans are nothing new. Previous skipper Matt Holland used to lap the pitch in appreciation of the supporters’ backing, but Chambers has really struck a chord with his own solo effort that is becoming more iconic with every game that passes.

He looked back on events at The Valley and said: "Once I’d sworn on telly I was looking behind me because I heard the roar from our crowd and I knew what was coming.

"I was laughing inside because if it is great for them it is fantastic for me. For virtually every single one of the 2,500 away fans to stay behind is a big thing for me.

"The lads give me a bit of stick about it but I’m sure they want to get involved as well because they were asking for one at Bournemouth when we had drawn 2-2 and that shows you the way things are moving at the moment. It’s just brilliant to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, Chambers looked ahead to the forthcoming Christmas/New Year period and laughed: "They’ve put us away on Boxing Day again, which is a little bit frustrating, but we know as footballers that it is part of our job. Whether we’ve got to be in training on Christmas Day or not, it makes no difference to us.

"We’ll see our families for a bit and then it’s back off to work again. But it’s one we look forward to because when things are going well you want the games to come thick and fast.

"It’s an exciting time for us, especially as we’re sitting second in the league. We know it’s very tight and a couple of average results could have us down to sixth or seventh. We’ll just keep ticking them off and hopefully continue to move forward.”
