McCarthy: There'll Be Nobody Going - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy says no one will be leaving Portman Road before the transfer window closes on Monday, aside from youngsters perhaps going out on loan to gain experience.

January has seen the likes of Tyrone Mings linked with amongst others Arsenal, Newcastle and Crystal Palace, Teddy Bishop with Liverpool and Daryl Murphy latterly with Hull City, but McCarthy isn’t expecting a busy deadline day.

"Not really, there’ll be none going out, nobody going from here, unless I want them to go - a loan, somebody in for a kid,” he said.

"We’ve got 21 first-team players, none of them are going anywhere and if we could add something then we would. I’m hard pushed to get somebody better than the ones we’ve got.

"We’ve got where we are with the players we’ve got and they’re fantastic and I’m not looking to replace them.”

Asked whether he’s surprised not to have received bids for his players, he added: "If they see my face on the newsreels every time they ask me and the mickey-take when you ask me these questions they must think ‘why would we even bother?’.

"And besides which the crazy figures that keep getting mentioned, whether it’s what we’re supposed to be asking for or that somebody’s going to bid £3 million for one of our players. Well, they’re both nonsense, both bonkers, so I’m not surprised.”

He says he’ll look at utilising the loan system if required: "If the squad is thin - and we’ve seen how brittle it can be, we ended up with six subs at Millwall - we can take them until the end of March on the emergency loan system. If we need to use it and we can use it, then we will.”

He says he’s made no approach to Crystal Palace for former loanee Jonny Williams, although would love to see the Wales international return to Portman Road: "The position with Jonny Williams has always been that if he’s available and we could have him we’d take him at the drop of a hat.

"But Jonny’s still injured. From what I gather he tried to come back and he felt it again. It was a nasty tackle at the time and it’s left him out for a long time.”

McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on the situation with 19-year-old former Shelbourne winger Dylan Connolly, who the Irish club wished good luck with the Blues on Twitter earlier today: "Until I do anything, I’ll let you know as normal.

"If we do sign somebody I think it would be nice if we could tweet it, if I could find somebody who knows how to use it!”

Later, he added: "If we do sign Dylan Connolly then I liked him [when he was on trial] in the summer, I thought he was a good player.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy confirmed that striker Paul Taylor is not training at the club following the end of his loan spell at Rotherham. The former Peterborough man is not in McCarthy's plans and has been told to find himself another club.
