Town boss Mick McCarthy has told his Colchester opposite number Tony Humes that he’s happy for full-back or midfielder Elliott Hewitt to stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the remainder of the season.
The 20-year-old, whose current spell is up after Saturday’s game away against his former loan club Gillingham, initially joined the U’s on loan in October and has now made 24 starts and has scored one goal for the League One side.
"It has been ongoing since we brought Elliott in on a month-by-month basis,” one-time Town central defender Humes told the Colchester Gazette.
"That’s how Mick wants it at Ipswich so if they need a recall then it is available.
"But Mick has said he is happy for him to stay for the season so I’d imagine it will be a quick phone call. I think Ipswich are happy with everything.
"Elliott has done well. He still has to learn the finer points of defending and there is still a lot of development to do, but he’s done well for us in every position he’s played for us. The last two games I think he has looked pretty solid.”
Wales U21 international Hewitt is out of contract with Town in the summer, although his deal includes the option for the Blues to extend his stay by another year.
