Academy Coach Wright Returns to Colchester - Ipswich Town News

Town academy coach David Wright is joining the staff of another of his former clubs Colchester United and is also taking over as boss at non-league Maldon and Tiptree.

One-time full-back Wright rejoined the Blues as a part-time coach in the summer of 2013, initially while still playing for the U’s, and has worked with Town’s U14s, U15s and latterly the U16s.

The 35-year-old hung up his boots in November 2014 to concentrate on his coaching career.

Wright’s new role will see him working alongside another ex-Town defender John McGreal with Colchester’s U21s, while he will also take over as boss at Maldon and Tiptree, who play in the Ryman League Division One North side, as part of a new link-up between the two clubs.

"I’m very excited about the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it. My full-time day to day role will be working with John McGreal at Colchester United," he told the Colchester Gazette.

"And I’ll also have a part-time role as manager of Maldon and Tiptree, although I’m not sure how part-time that will be with the responsibilities that I’ll have! It’s going to be a big learning curve for me.

"But going down the coaching route has been something that’s been on my mind for many years."

Wright joins a number of other ex-Blues at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. Former centre-half and academy head Tony Humes is the manager, while his assistant Richard Hall was a youth player with his hometown club and also coached in the academy. Wayne Brown coaches their U18s, while Fabian Wilnis also works at their academy.
