U18s to Take Part in Suffolk Premier Cup - Ipswich Town News

Town’s U18s will take part in this year’s Suffolk Premier Cup, the first time a Blues side has entered the competition since 2012/13.

A Town reserves side exited to Lowestoft at the semi-final stage that season with the Blues' second string last carrying off the trophy back in 2009/10 when they defeated Needham Market 4-1 in the final.

"We look forward to taking part in the Suffolk Premier Cup again,” Town’s Academy manager Bryan Klug told the club site.

"We have a number of young players making good progress through our Academy and it will be good for their development to see them presented with the challenge of playing against local teams, with a trophy at stake.”

The Blues will concede home advantage during their run in the competition, which will be sponsored by Omni Freight Services Ltd for the next three years, with their opponents keeping the gate receipts.

Suffolk FA chief executive Laura Smith added: "We are delighted that Ipswich Town will be competing in the Premier Cup in the coming season with local non-league players having the chance to challenge themselves against players from a professional club.

"Ipswich Town’s presence not only increases the profile of the competition, but also provides our non-League sides with the possibility of hosting a tie against the club and all the potential benefits that brings with it.”

The draws for the first and second rounds of the competition, won last year by Lowestoft, will take place next month.

Town and the Suffolk FA are in talks regarding the possibility of playing the Premier Cup and the other county cup finals at Portman Road at the end of the season.
