McCarthy Pleased With Early Form - Ipswich Town News

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he’s been impressed with the way his team has played in the first two games of the Championship season, believing they ought to have six points rather than their current total of four.

"We’ve played well,” he said. "I thought we were excellent at Brentford and we had a three, four, five-minute spell of madness and the momentum went the other way and we ended up drawing a game that we should have won.

"I was talking to U18s coach Gerard Nash and he said that they played worse last week and won [4-2 at Coventry] and played better this week and lost [3-2 at home to Crewe].

"I said that that was a bit like us and he said ‘I wouldn’t say that, I thought we were great on Saturday, I thought we played really well’.

"I said we did but that we were better at Brentford, certainly more commanding and had more chances and we ended up drawing that and we won Saturday.

"They’re real tough games, all three of them have been tough. I thought Saturday was, I think Sheffield Wednesday are a really capable team, they’ve got some good players and we had to play well to win that, we had to be really at full tilt.”

After only two games, leaders Brighton are the only team in the Championship on maximum points and McCarthy expects the division to be as tight as ever this season.

"There’s not that much between us, there wasn’t a great deal between us and Sheffield Wednesday,” he continued.

"We won the game, probably had more chances, we had home advantage, we hadn’t travelled, hadn’t stayed in a hotel overnight, all those things.

"There wasn’t a lot between us and I think you’ll find that with all the teams.”
