All-Rounder Yorwerth Out to Make His Name With Town - Ipswich Town News

The term all-round sportsman is the perfect label for Josh Yorwerth, the young Welshman who scored on his Town debut in the 2-1 victory over Stevenage in the Capital One Cup two weeks ago.

Yorwerth is keen to make a name for himself in the world of football but was also a promising young cricketer and rugby player back in his native Bridgend, while also well above average at golf.

He said: "I played cricket for my county, rugby for Wales U11s and I like to play a lot of golf as well.

"Football has always been my main sport to be honest but I think playing rugby was where I got my aggression.

"I’m not the broadest but I think I’m very strong and can definitely handle myself. I enjoyed rugby and I still do — but watching rather than playing.”

Yorwerth arrived at Ipswich on a free transfer, having been released by Cardiff at the end of last season, but admitted not being offered a new contract by the Bluebirds almost came as a relief since he felt he was not progressing there and felt a change of scenery would be beneficial.

He added: "I was 12 when Cardiff first scouted me as a central midfielder down in Swansea when I was playing for the Bridgend district team.

"I went up for a couple of weeks on trial and I didn’t really like it. I felt a bit out of place. They were good players and I didn’t really think I was good enough.

"I just wanted to get back to my friends and have a kickabout in the park, like we did every week. I went and played rugby for two years and then when I was 14 they saw me playing centre-half and asked me to go back.

"I went for a six-week trial and at the end of the first week they gave me a contract until I was 16. That’s how it all started.

"Last season they told me I wouldn’t be retained and to be honest I wasn’t really disappointed.

"I was actually happy to get out of the club because I never felt I was ever going to progress through. I never trained with the first team and I was never given an opportunity there.

"I’m thankful now that I’m at a club where the manager is willing to give me an opportunity and if I carry on working hard and training hard things will work out.

"Am I keen to prove Cardiff wrong? Yes, 100 per cent, of course I am. They released me and that’s fine so now it’s up to me to go out and make a career for myself. At this club I think I have a good chance of doing it.

"I’ve just got to keep working hard every day in training and hopefully I’ll be given an opportunity.

"It would be good to be part of a run in the Capital One Cup but it’s all about just doing your best and when a chance comes making sure you take it. No one can ask for any more.”
