McCarthy: Fabulous Draw - Ipswich Town News

Boss Mick McCarthy hailed Town drawing Manchester United at Old Trafford in the third round of the Capital One Cup as “fabulous”, but admitted he might have to change his policy of fielding his youngsters in the competition against such stiff opposition.

"It’s a fabulous draw,” he told the club site. "I don’t mind travelling to that one. I thought we might get someone away from League Two when we have to travel miles and the pressure is on but that’s a great trip to make.

"I’m pleased for the fans as well. Over 700 have made it to Doncaster tonight so that’s a great draw for them. I’m sure they will look forward to it.”

He added: "I said that I would play the kids whoever we played but I might have to think again now!

"I’ll have Bish back and Kevin Bru and a few others. We will have a stronger squad and we will see where we are when that game comes around.”

The game at Old Trafford is likely to be on Wednesday 23rd September with Manchester United playing on the preceding Sunday.

Meanwhile, debutant goalscorer James Alabi was pleased with his performance, his goal and more than anything the victory: "It was a great debut for me personally but all the lads have done well tonight to come from behind and win the game.

"Doncaster made us work hard for the win tonight but we showed good character and deserved it in the end. The fans have made a long trip and I’m just pleased we’ve sent them home happy.

"The gaffer has given the young lads a chance tonight and that’s one of the main reasons I joined Ipswich, because he does show that belief.

"I’m delighted to score and it was a poacher’s finish really. Hopefully that can be the first of many when I’m given a chance. I just promise to work hard and see where it takes me and, of course, the club.”
