Webster Backs Marshall - Ipswich Town News

Town goalkeeping coach Malcolm Webster has backed underfire keeper Andy Marshall. Webster, who has coached Marshall since his days at Norwich, says the stopper may have made an error on Wednesday, but that there were mitigating circumstances.

Webster says the conditions at Elland Road were the worst he's seen: "Andy has made a blunder and he knows, it but I must say that when I went out to warm-up with him at Elland Road I encountered the most windy conditions I have ever experienced at a game.

"In the first half he did well. He caught well and he kicked well in difficult conditions. Then came the Fowler goal and, while Andy is prepared to take the full blame, I must set out some mitigating circumstances.

"Andy saw Fowler come in the the penalty box and he saw him set himself for the shot. Robbie drew his foot back and Andy was all set to go.

"He then saw the delay and tried his hardest not to go, but he could not adjust his feet in time."

Webster backed his keeper saying "I don't see a problem", and said the error could have happened to anyone. The keeper coach says Marshall will learn from the error and will come through well.

With Webster backing Marshall a return for Matteo Sereni at Blackburn on Wednesday now looks unlikely.
