Murphy Getting Plenty of Support From Back Home - Ipswich Town News
Striker Daryl Murphy has given the thumbs-up to the latest branch of the Supporters’ Club, launched in his home town of Waterford — with one of the 30-plus members being his brother and meetings taking place in the pub owned by his in-laws.
He said: "My brother’s part of it but he didn’t start it. Matt Keane, a local pressman in Waterford, is a good friend of mine and it was him and his friend who started it.
"Matt’s been coming over to Ipswich for years to the games and a teacher at my old school [Barry Williams] is also a massive Ipswich fan. He got a group of pupils together to come over for a game last season and they’re trying to do it again this season.
"Matt just rang me one night and said he had started up a branch of the Supporters’ Club — he went through the club and all the proper channels he was supposed to go through.
"The club is based in the pub — Katty Barry’s — that my in-laws bought and run so they’re buzzing as well with all the extra business it brings in.
"It’s good to have the club because Matt has been coming over for years and has been to lots of games at Portman Road.
"My old secondary school is St Paul’s Community College and they have my signed shirt on display in the woodwork room.
"They had a lot of the members in the pub for the games that were on Sky recently. Waterford’s not the biggest place but to already have more than 30 members is pretty good.”
