Town new boy Liam Feeney has told supporters exactly what they can expect from him when he makes his debut.
That could be in tomorrow’s visit from Rotherham when, depending on results elsewhere, victory for Mick McCarthy’s men could see them climb into the coveted play-off places.
Feeney is still catching his breath after a whirlwind few days that has seen him join on loan for the rest of the season from Bolton, swapping a survival struggle there for the promotion challenge on offer at Portman Road.
The 29-year-old winger said: "I don’t really mind where I play across the forward positions, whether I’m wide or through the middle. I’m happy to go along with what the gaffer wants from me.
"I’m direct, pacy and I like to work hard. Hopefully the fans will see that in the weeks to come and I’ll have a successful spell here.
"My game is to try to get on the ball and be creative with it — run at people, get forward with the ball, try to get shots off and try to get assists.
"That’s what I’ll be trying to bring to the team and when the gaffer calls for me that’s what I’ll be looking to contribute.”
Feeney is likely to feature, perhaps even from the start, against a Rotherham side who still occupy a place in the Championship drop zone but have been buoyed by new boss Neil Warnock’s impact and an impressive haul of 10 points from their last four league fixtures.
Successive wins over Brentford, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough were followed by last week’s tremendous 3-3 home draw with Derby, a remarkable game in which the Millers trailed 3-0 with just seven minutes left for play.
Feeney reflected on the events of a hectic few days, revealing: "It was on Tuesday just after training when I was told there was a chance I’d be coming down here. I heard the news in a phone call from my agent, who said the two clubs had agreed a deal.
"I went to see the manager, Neil Lennon, after that and it all happened pretty quickly from there. I drove down that afternoon and saw the boys get a good win over Blackburn and I came in on Thursday for my first day’s training.
"It’s strange how things can work out. I was playing against Ipswich last week and before I got the call on Tuesday I was just preparing as usual for Bolton’s game on Saturday against Bristol City.
"Then that night I was down here watching Ipswich beat Blackburn and hopefully I’ll be involved on Saturday against Rotherham.
"That’s how it can go in football and I can only say I’m pleased with the way it has all worked out for me.
"The lads had a difficult game against Blackburn, who never make it easy for you, and when you get to this point in the season they’re not always going to be pretty, free-flowing games.
"It was a good solid win and I thought the lads dominated the game. I like to think I’ll be able to add something to the team and I’m fully fit if the gaffer wants me to start with me on Saturday.
"The decision to come here wasn’t difficult. Obviously, the situation at Bolton isn’t great at the moment and to come into a side that is pushing for promotion is a positive thing. I’m excited about the opportunity and hopefully I can help out.”
