Spurs Run Rule Over Benyu and Reach NextGen Final - Ipswich Town News

Town youngster Kundai Benyu helped Tottenham’s U19s to the final of the NextGen Series tournament in Amsterdam where they were beaten 2-0 by South African side Ajax Cape Town in this afternoon's final.

TWTD understands that the Premier League side were taking the opportunity to run the rule over the 18-year-old, who has a pro contract with the Blues which runs until the summer of 2017.

Benyu, who missed much of 2015/16 with a persistent knee injury before returning to action in the final weeks, played the whole of Spurs’ 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven in their opening group game on Saturday with the tournament’s matches played over two halves of 25 minutes at the Olympic Stadium.

"Having been left out of the team which lost 2-0 to Ajax Cape Town, Benyu then played the first 47 minutes of a 2-0 victory over Ghanaian side Right to Dream in their last group match.

The midfielder, who recently completed his two-year scholarship with the Blues, was an unused sub for this morning’s semi-final against Ajax, which Spurs won 2-0, and also for the final.

Benyu is yet to make his senior Town debut but was on the first-team bench twice in the Championship during 2014/15 and for the Capital One Cup games against Stevenage and Doncaster during 2015/16.

Town boss Mick McCarthy has previously said Benyu is in his thoughts as one of the youngsters who could be involved in the Blues first team next season.

However, Town have a number of young central midfielders coming through at present including Andre Dozzell and Adam McDonnell, who made their debuts in the final weeks of the season, and James Blanchfield, as well as Teddy Bishop, who returned from injury in the last few games.
