Barnsley at Home on Opening Day as Norwich Also Visit in August - Ipswich Town News

Town’s 2016/17 SkyBet Championship campaign will start with a game at Portman Road against manager Mick McCarthy’s hometown club Barnsley, who were promoted from League One via the play-offs, while August also features the home derby against newly-relegated Norwich City.

Following the visit by the Tykes, with whom McCarthy began his playing career, on Saturday 6th August, the Blues will play their first round EFL Cup tie in midweek with the draw this afternoon at 1pm.

A trip to Brentford, the venue for last season’s opening game of the season, follows on Saturday 13th August with a visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday 16th August.

That East Anglian derby at Portman Road is currently set for Saturday 20th August with a 3pm kick-off, although as in previous years could move to the lunchtime or the Sunday. Preston visit Suffolk the following Saturday for August’s final fixture.

After the first international break of the season, Town start September with a visit to Reading on Saturday 10th with a Tuesday game at Derby on the 13th.

Looking ahead to the run-in, April starts with a Saturday home game against Birmingham City on the 1st with Wigan Athletic at Portman Road three days later.

The Blues are at Fulham on Saturday 8th April and Town’s first ever competitive game at Burton Albion is on Easter Saturday, 15th April, with Newcastle United visiting Suffolk for the first time since 2009/10 on Easter Monday, 17th April.

Boss McCarthy has previously sought to move Easter Saturday games to Good Friday to give players an additional day’s recovery time.

Town take a trip to Rotherham on Saturday 22nd April, then Sheffield Wednesday are in Suffolk for Portman Road's final gameo of the regular Championship season a week later.

The campaign, the Blues 15th in a row in the Championship, ends with a game at Nottingham Forest on Sunday 7th May, which kicks-off at noon.

The Blues are at home on both Boxing Day, when they face Fulham, and New Year’s Eve, when Bristol City are at Portman Road. They travel to QPR on Monday 2nd January, which is a Bank Holiday.

The Carrow Road derby is currently scheduled for Saturday 25th February, while Town's away games against the other two relegated former Premier League sides Newcastle United and Aston Villa are on Saturday 22nd October and Saturday 11th February respectively.

Burton Albion are at Portman Road for the first time in their history on Tuesday 18th October.

In addition to the trips to Wolverhampton and Derby, Town also have midweek away games at Birmingham City on Tuesday 13th December and Brighton on Tuesday 14th February.
