Town boss Mick McCarthy is confident of adding further to his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, having re-signed Luke Varney on a short-term deal until January earlier today.
"It’s great to have Reg back,” McCarthy told the club site regarding Varney, who is back at Portman Road for a third spell having been on a short-term deal last season after a spell on loan from Blackburn during the previous campaign.
"He was a free agent at the end of last season so he could do what he wanted but I had reservations about not sorting something out then.
"He’s a good player and has been a good servant to us. He’s a great personality. We all love him, the staff, the players.
"With Didz injured, we had to try and get someone in before the weekend. That was never going to be easy but I knew Reg would be fit and could do a job for us.
"There were clubs interested in him but I rang him yesterday and it was all sorted in no time.”
McCarthy says he has continued to speak to Premier League clubs about more signings, presumably loans, although at yesterday’s press conference he wasn’t ruling out further permanent additions.
"We are still looking to add to the squad further before the window closes. I’ve had discussions with some Premier League clubs and they are saying ‘We are trying to get someone in. This might happen, that might happen - if it does, we might be able to do something’.
"So it’s a case of being patient at the moment but I’m confident that we will add to the squad before the end of August.”
