Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that striker David McGoldrick won’t require surgery on his ankle injury but still faces up to 10 weeks on the sidelines. Brett Pitman and Conor Grant are also unavailable for tomorrow’s game at Wolves, while Luke Hyam is out for three more weeks with his knee problem.
McGoldrick, 28, saw a specialist earlier today regarding the injury he suffered soon after coming on as a half-time sub against Stevenage last Tuesday.
"He doesn’t need an operation, he’ll wear a boot for three to four weeks to let it settle down so he can’t walk on it while it stabilises,” McCarthy said.
"He’ll have some sugar injections in it which helps the ligament heal and strengthen and tighten. And then he’ll be in his rehab.
"He’s probably eight weeks to 10 as opposed to 10 to 12 to 14. While it’s still bad news, it’s better news than it could have been. He’s not having an operation.”
The Blues manager says fellow frontman Pitman is still suffering with his thigh injury and won’t travel to Molineux: "Norwich at best. He’s not ready for tomorrow. He went out and did some training and he felt it slightly.
"So he stopped and we’re back to just getting him to where he doesn’t feel it at all. Fingers crossed he’s going to be ready and available for the Norwich game.”
He added: "Conor Grant has trained really well this morning and then he’s come off and he’s got a tight groin, so he’s not available for tomorrow night. We’re looking a bit bare, I have to be honest.”
McCarthy confirmed that last week’s re-signing Luke Varney will travel - "He’s in the squad” - but says Hyam remains out.
"He’s probably going to be out for another three weeks,” the Town boss continued. "He had nerve conduction tests and we’re just going to have to accept that we’re going to have leave him and hopefully it’ll settle down and he’ll be back.”
McCarthy says no new additions are imminent and played down suggestions that his presence at the Arsenal-Reading U23s game on Friday might mean there's a possibility of Ainsley Maitland-Niles returning for a second loan: "I’ve never had that discussion with him, so I wouldn’t know.”
