Defender Jonas Knudsen is confident Town can turn the corner and avoid a third successive defeat when they take on Wolves at Molineux tonight.
The 23-year-old Dane was signed from Esbjerg in July last year and quickly established himself in Mick McCarthy’s team, clocking up a total of 43 appearances and scoring his first — and so far only — goal in the 1-1 home draw with Fulham in April.
But after featuring in the promising 4-2 home win over Barnsley on the opening day of the new campaign Knudsen was one of only four players to retain their places for the 1-0 home defeat by League Two club Stevenage in the first round of the EFL Cup at Portman Road a week ago.
Then on Saturday he returned to Brentford, scene of his Town debut in a 2-2 draw on the opening day of last season, and was on the losing side again as two second-half goals from the Bees stung McCarthy’s men and saw them suffer a 2-0 defeat.
Knudsen looked back of the Griffin Park setback and said: "It was very disappointing because I thought we did well in the first half and played the style of football we want to play.
"We put them under pressure and had some good chances to score, while they didn’t manage to do much to threaten us.
"It all started to go wrong when they scored from a corner at the start of the second half. We should have coped better over the next five minutes, getting back to our shape and doing what we were doing in the first half, because at 1-0 you still have a chance to get back in the game.
"We have to be better than that and I think we will do that in our next game at Wolves.”
The last thing Knudsen & Co want is to be heading into Sunday’s first East Anglian derby clash of the new season against relegated Norwich on the back of three straight defeats.
He added: "It is a very important game at Wolves. We had a great start with three points against Barnsley and then on the Tuesday against Stevenage I don’t think we played too badly in the first half.
"But everybody knows that goals change games and we saw that again on Saturday at Brentford.
"We did well in the first half and when I was chatting to the Brentford players afterwards they said we should have been in front at half-time.
"But we weren’t because we didn’t score the goals when we were on top. The other team will always get a chance and when theirs came they took them.
"Wolves will be a tough game. They have new owners and they are ambitious. We have to be ready and I think we are but every game in this league is tough.
"If we play as we did in the first half at Brentford I think we have a good chance to take something out of the Wolves game.”
