Douglas: More to Come From Me - Ipswich Town News

Experienced midfielder Jonathan Douglas has assured fans there is even more to come after his starring role in the recent draws at Wolves and at home to Norwich.

The former Republic of Ireland international, who recently celebrated the first anniversary of his move to Portman Road following his release by Brentford, said: "I think you probably saw the best of me in a few games last year but I think there’s still a lot more to come, not just from me but the entire team.

"At the end of the day, if the team are winning it’s not down to anybody individually. As long as we’re winning the team’s happy and everybody’s happy.

"It can be tough when you join a new club because with a new formation and a different way of playing it takes time to gel. But I felt really at home from the start here.

"The system we are playing at the moment suits me. I suppose it gives me licence to get into the box and hopefully chip in with the odd goal here and there.

"But we have a good team and it doesn’t matter what formation the manager plays. We just need to stick together when things aren’t going well and keep working hard because eventually it will turn.”

Douglas, who scored eight times in his final season with the Bees and has netted three times in his 43 appearances for Town, wants to contribute more goals and added: "As long as we can keep creating chances and I can get into the box I think I can get a few goals.

"Wardy [Grant Ward] coming in has helped and so does the way Freddie [Sears] plays, getting balls into the box. I’ll also be looking to pick up some scraps off Murph.”

The man from Monaghan, who also played for Blackburn, Leeds and Swindon, knows he has not always been a favourite of supporters. He admitted: "You’re always aware of it. When you’re on social media it’s hard not to read about it but it’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

"They’re not happy if things are not going well — but we’re not happy either. We don’t like going into games and not getting the three points, not putting in the level of performance that we know we’re capable of doing, and I think in the last couple of games we know we’ve done really well.”

Douglas would be happy to extend his stay with Town to a third season, adding: "I’m very happy here. Ever since I walked through the door the lads have made me feel at home.

"People like Chambo, he’s the main man who gels the team together. I’ve got a lot of respect for him as captain and the way he goes about it. I’ve no reason to leave and would be happy to extend my contract to stay at the club.”
