Benitez: Murphy Will Add Competition Up Front - Ipswich Town News

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez says Daryl Murphy will add to his options up front as the Magpies look to return to the Premier League at their first attempt. The 33-year-old is expected to complete a £3 million switch in the next few days ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

Speaking after Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over Brighton at St James’ Park this evening Benitez admitted he wasn’t sure how close the deal is to completion.

"I have no idea,” he said."I was concentrating on the game. I need to talk to [managing director] Lee Charnley.

"I don't know. I knew maybe he was coming, but it depends on the business. I just concentrate on the football.”

Why is he signing Murphy? "Competition up front. We have good strikers, so to have another one with good experience will give us competition if everything is fine."

Meanwhile, on-loan Town defender Joe Robinson made his debut for Boston United as they drew 1-1 Kidderminster Harriers.

Robinson, 20, joined the Vanarama National League North side Boston United on a month's youth loan on Thursday.
