Murphy Completes Newcastle Move - Ipswich Town News

Daryl Murphy has completed his £3 million move to Newcastle United, signing a two-year deal.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it," Murphy told the Magpies official website.

"When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me, so I'm happy it's all done.

"I think with the squad of players that the club have now, there's no reason why we shouldn't be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez added: "Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

"He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend's game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

"Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season."

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland during Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at the Stadium of Light, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he was yet to get off the mark for the Blues this season prior to his switch, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy, who almost joined the Blues from his hometown club Waterford United in 2004/05 having been on trial before he signed for the Black Cats, scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

Boss McCarthy is confident that he will sign a replacement for Murphy before Wednesday's 11pm deadline.

"I’ve no doubt we will get someone in," he told the club site. "I’ve been on the phone non-stop recently so we will see what happens over the next few days.”
