Town owner Marcus Evans is among 10 people to have been charged by Brazilian prosecutors regarding the alleged selling of Olympics tickets at prices significantly above their face value.
Also among the 10 are former Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) president Pat Hickey, Kevin Mallon, a director of Evans’s THG Sports hospitality company, and directors of Pro 10, the OCI’s Authorised Ticket Reseller (ATR).
Only Hickey and Mallon, who are both on bail having previously been held in prison, are currently in Rio.
The 10 have variously been charged with ticket touting, forming a criminal cartel, illicit marketing, embezzlement, tax evasion and money laundering, according to a statement from Brazil’s state prosecutors, which didn’t specify which charges relate to which individuals.
A judge will now assess the charges before deciding whether or not to proceed with the case.
"The denouncement has already been sent to the court,” prosecutor Marcos Kac told the Irish Examiner. "It is up to the court whether to accept this. I believe this will happen on Thursday.”
Evans, THG, Pro 10, Mallon, whose arrest at the start of the Rio Games triggered the investigation, and Hickey have all denied any wrongdoing.
A statement from Town regarding the latest development reads: "We are aware of it. It's not a matter for the football club directly, it's a matter for THG and they are dealing with it."
