McCarthy Hopes Varney Does Enough to Win Longer Stay - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes striker Luke Varney can continue to make the sort of impact he made at Derby on Tuesday night and win himself a longer deal with the Blues. Varney, 33, who scored the winning goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory at the iPro Stadium, rejoined Town for a third spell on a short-term deal last month.

"He’s contracted until January 20-something,” McCarthy said. "Didzy got injured, I knew Reg hadn’t gone anywhere, I think Burton were sniffing, Port Vale were talking to him, so I went in for him.

"I knew I could trust him, I knew he’d be fitting in, I wasn’t worried about any of that and I knew he would give us something.

"So we took him on a short-term contract and if he’s doing great, we’ll want to sign him and if he wants to stay, he can.

"If he’s ripping it up and somebody else wants to sign him then he’d got options. And I’m delighted for him.

"I hope he’s got those options and we’re wanting to keep him because he’s such a great guy around the place.”
